Sharp and Motorola Forge Cross-License Patent Agreement for wireless communication technologies
Sharp and Motorola have declared a reciprocal patent licensing arrangement concerning their wireless communication technologies. Lenovo expressed satisfaction with the agreement, highlighting that both parties reached a consensus on the equitable valuation of each other's portfolios. The commitment to license on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms was emphasized by both companies.
Sharp disclosed its licensing of standard essential patents for wireless communication technologies to prominent entities in the telecommunications and automotive sectors across Japan, the U.S.A., Europe, China, and South Korea. The company intends to broaden its licensee base and extend standard essential patent licenses to other entities under fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory conditions.
John Mulgrew, Vice President and Global Head of Intellectual Property at Lenovo, offered his thoughts on the accord with Sharp:
The cross-licensing agreement with Sharp exemplifies a harmonious collaboration between two companies, characterized by mutual respect for each other’s investments and innovations, and a willingness to negotiate under FRAND principles. Lenovo remains steadfast in its commitment to FRAND principles across all licensing negotiations and agreements, whether as the licensee or licensor. As a leading global technology provider and patent holder, we are dedicated to ensuring continued access to affordable innovation for our customers, both through our proprietary advancements and those resulting from industry cross-licensing agreements.
