Samsung Galaxy S7 may come with a micro-USB port, and that's fine with me
Over the last couple of weeks, there has been a steady stream of leaked images, specifications, videos about Samsung's upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S7 and one thing that most people are hung-up on is that it lacks a USB Type-C port and goes for the more conventional micro-USB alternative.
Even if this is true, its actually a good thing. USB Type-C has yet to go mainstream, its not yet available on most PC's, even new one's that have launched recently. Same goes for smartphone manufacturers as well.
The majority of smartphones that were launched in 2015, came with a micro-USB port and its widespread adoption has meant for easy access to charging/data transfer cables. Whether you are at home or at a bus stop/railway station, you don't have to hunt for the particular cable that came with your device.
With USB Type-C, its a completely different affair. The lack of standardization means that you need to carry the cable that came with your device. There are several counterfeit cables, adapters available in the market which may actually damage your device or the charger. Due to lack of any regulation or certification, you can only trust accessories from popular brands, which are not cheap.
There are some great technological breakthroughs with USB Type-C, which at present none of the smartphones are leveraging apart from faster charging. With the new crop of Samsung smartphones, you already get fast charging and support for wireless charging. Then there's the question of water-resistance.
Samsung has already pioneered its way of making smartphones water-resistant with a cap-less micro-USB port, it may have taken far more resources to get a USB Type-C port sealed against water damage, which would have percolated to added cost for the consumers.
Its a prudent decision to go with a micro-USB port on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge from a consumer standpoint and makes perfect business sense as well.
