Google targeting $50 starting price-point for the Project Ara modular smartphone
The one thing Google retained after selling off Motorola was the Advanced Technology Group, which has now become the Advanced Technology and Projects Group (ATAP) within Google. Project ARA modular phone based on the phone blocks concept is one of the projects that the team is currently working on and now we have news that Google is planning a $50 entry price point for the first modular smartphone.
The entry-level Project Ara smartphone will be a bare bones unit with WiFi but no cellular connectivity. Additional modules will cost more and the ATAP team is also working on 3D printer tech to allow users to customize their phone themselves. The endoskeleton will be provided by Google and is expected to be 9.7 mm thin akin to a LEGO baseplate and the entire phone with the various components added will measure near about 10 mm.
