Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 805 SoC with 4K video support, Adreno 420 GPU

Qualcomm has just announced the successor of the powerful Snapdragon 800 SoC, the new Snapdragon 805 SoC which features quad-core innards capable of 4K video support and includes Adreno 420 GPU, which is 40% faster than previous-gen Adreno 3230 GPU. The new chipset supports both playback and capture of Ultra HD or 4K video as well as streaming to a compatible Ultra HD TV, that's some serious bandwidth. Now let's get into the nitty gritty of the features of Snapdragon 805:

  • It features 4 Krait 450 cores clocked at 2.5 GHz with combined memory bandwidth upto 25.6 GB/s
  • Adreno 420 GPU with support for UltraHD video Playback and Capture.
  • Dual-band Qualcomm VIVE 802.11ac Wi-Fi, provides bandwidth for 4K streaming over Wi-Fi (upto 600 mbps)
  • 4K HEVC (H.265) hardware decoding for low-power and low-latency video playback
  • Support for GPixels/s throughput cameras for better speed and imaging quality with minimal line distortion

The Snapdragon 805 chipset will make its way into smartphones in the early part of 2014, at present its in the testing phases and we might see some test devices released soon to developers.
