OnePlus maybe prepping for an updated OnePlus 3, but its not killing the phone

Over the last couple of weeks, there have been many reports that OnePlus maybe planning a mid-cycle hardware refresh for the OnePlus 3. The reports gained weight as news started flowing that the company had stopped production of their flagship smartphone due to AMOLED display shortages. However, the company has confirmed that they are still producing the OnePlus 3 and selling it as well.

The rumors had some footing as the delay between orders and shipment has now risen to a month in some regions due to a highly unprecedented rise in use of AMOLED panels on smartphones in 2016. Therefor, OnePlus may be planning to switch to an IPS LCD for the refreshed OnePlus 3S or OnePlus 3 Plus.

However, the company may not abandon the current-gen OnePlus 3 but instead augement the same phone with a higher-resolution (say Quad-HD) IPS LCD display instead of the 1080p AMOLED panel. This could hit the battery-life on the smartphone and would render Ambient Display mode useless.

At present there is no confirmation from OnePlus on whether they are working on an upgrade for the OnePlus 3, but a shift to LCD displays might be in the offing with Snapdragon 821 innards.
