Nokia sues Apple in Germany and the US over 32 patent infringements
Nokia announced today that they are suing Apple over patent infringement in the US and Germany. According to the report, Apple had earlier licensed some Nokia patents in 2011 but declined to do so in the following years while still continuing to use the technology.
The lawsuit says Apple violated 32 patents related to display, user interface, antenna, chipsets and even video encoding. Nokia has filed the suit in Dusseldorf, Mannheim and Munich in Germany and the US District court For Eastern Texas. But the company is going to file for "further actions in other jurisdictions."
Ilkka Rahnasto, head of Patent Business at Nokia, added“Through our sustained investment in research and development, Nokia has created or contributed to many of the fundamental technologies used in today’s mobile devices, including Apple products. Through our sustained investment in research and development, Nokia has created or contributed to many of the fundamental technologies used in today’s mobile devices, including Apple products. After several years of negotiations trying to reach agreement to cover Apple’s use of these patents, we are now taking action to defend our rights.
In essence, Nokia owns a huge gamut of patents some of which were granted to them while others were received with acquisitions of NSN (Nokia Siemens Network) in 2013 and Alcatel-Lucent in 2016.
But this was just phase one, Apple has not yet responded to the lawsuits. Nokia is said to be making a comeback to the smartphone space with Android devices early next year and this lawsuit would at least get some more eyeballs in their direction. However, this was a long time coming if the folks over at Nokia are to be believed.
