According to a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is set to revamp its iPad lineup in 2024 to simplify choices and increase sales. Initially consisting of two main models, the iPad lineup has expanded over time, confusing consumers.
Currently, Apple offers five main iPad models, each with slight variations in features and screen sizes, making decision-making challenging for customers.
Changes in Pro and Air Models -
In response, Apple aims to streamline its iPad lineup, drawing inspiration from its more straightforward Mac lineup. The plan involves reducing confusion between the iPad Pro and Air models.
The Pro model will undergo significant changes, including an OLED screen, updated design, M3 chip, and a revamped Magic Keyboard attachment, positioning it as the highest-end model. The iPad Air, available in 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch configurations and equipped with an M2 processor, will significantly improve over the standard iPad.
Apple plans to release the new Pro and Air models around March, coinciding with the launch of the 11th-generation iPad. The company intends to phase out the ninth-generation iPad with a home button and large bezels. The iPad mini is also set to receive an update with a faster processor.
While streamlining to just the Pro and Air models would simplify the lineup, Apple acknowledges the need for a cheaper model for the education market and intends to retain the iPad mini for users who prefer a smaller tablet.
Apple's Upcoming Releases: M3 MacBook Air Models and Vision Pro -
Gurman also mentions Apple's plan to release the M3 MacBook Airs in a few months, featuring a 3-nanometer chip. This move is likely targeted at users of older MacBook Air models, rather than those with the recently released M2 chip.
In addition to the iPad and MacBook updates, Apple is gearing up for the release of the Vision Pro headset. Training sessions for retail employees are scheduled for mid-January, emphasizing the complex customization process required for each user. The Vision Pro is expected to be initially available in the U.S. only, with appointments required for in-store purchases. Apple aims to release the Vision Pro by early 2024, before March.
Future Changes and Challenges -
Gurman highlights a crucial question: whether this simplification will rejuvenate the tablet category. While new models at higher prices may boost short-term revenue, the long-term success of iPads remains uncertain, especially with the upcoming competition from touch-screen MacBooks in a few years.
