    Hardware Overview

The XOLO Q1200 is not cheap, be it in quality or price. You can get it for about 14,000 in the market and for that it packs quite a lot. There is a 5-inch HD IPS display in the front clad in Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and its powered by a 1.3 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6582 processor with 1 GB RAM, Mali-400 MP2 GPU, 8 GB ROM running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Out of the 8 GB ROM you have about 4 GB available to install apps and games but you can expand that with a microSD card slot up to 32 GB.

Coming to the camera front, the XOLO Q1200 gets an 8 MP rear camera with dual-LED flash and Sony Exmor R Sensor capable of recording 1080p videos alongwith a 2 MP front-facing camera. There are dual speakers at the back.

Connectivity options aren't limited either, but this is a single SIM 3G device with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, FM Radio and USB OTG support built-in. You also have the normal set of sensors available including and accelerometer, proximity sensor, light sensor and magnetic field sensor. There is a 2000 mAh non-removable battery here.

    Build

Just as you take the XOLO Q1200 out of its box you feel its quality. The reassuring weight of the device gives it a solid feel even though it is very thin at just 6.85mm.

    Front Display

In the front you have the 5-inch display with capacitive buttons for menu, home and back just below it. The capacitive buttons are not backlit. Above the display you have the proximity and light sensors, 2 MP front camera and main earpiece. There is no branding in the front.

The entire front panel is clad in Corning Gorilla Glass 3 to protect against scratched and minor damage. The sides of the front panel are raised slightly to protect again face first impact.

    Left Side

Coming to the sides, you will see the metal backcover which also finds its way to the sides. There is a metallic band that runs around the entire device separating the front and back. Oddly the power/lock button and volume rocker have been placed on the left side of the device instead of right and you have the SIM / microSD card tray on the right. Both buttons are made of metal and give a re-assuring click when pressed and have good travel.

    Top Side

The 3.5 mm audio jack finds its way to the top while the micro-USB data syncing / charging port can be seen at the bottom alongwith the primary microphone.

    Backcover

At the back you will be able to see the metallic back-cover in the middle flanked by white plastic bands at the top and bottom. Those are there presumably to house the antennae of the device. There are two small dots on each on the plastic bands which are presumably there to keep the device a bit raised from a flat surface, but don’t do a good job of that.

    Camera Back

Then there’s the 8 MP rear camera with dual-LED flash on its side. There are two speakers on the XOLO Q1200 each on the white plastic bands at the top and bottom. The camera does protrude quite a bit from the back and is more helpful than the small dots on the white bands in keeping the phone off the surface. You can find the only branding on the device which says XOLO on the metallic back-cover and that completes our tour of the device.

    Sim Tray

There is only word that comes to mind when talking about the build quality of the Q1200, its solid. Its sturdy and the design even though feels inspired looks great and holds in own. There is no creaking or flex anywhere but it seems that the metal back-cover will get scratched easily. Then again XOLO already has a solution for that, the included flip-cover within the box.

    First Impressions

The XOLO Q1200 uses a completely different skin on Android, which you might not have seen previously. It looks and feels like MIUI in almost every aspect right down to settings. There is no app-drawer and all the installed apps can be found right on the homescreens, but thankfully you can organize them in folders.

The display on the Q1200 is rich in colors and has very wide viewing angles. Color reproduction seems excellent as does overall saturation. Its bright and vibrant. The capacitive buttons should have been backlit but we will let this one slide. Even though the front is covered in Corning Gorilla Glass it doesn't attract fingerprints that easily and nor does the back of the device.

The buttons offer a satisfactory click and the overall rigidity, build of the device is something to be proud off. The little time I spent with the camera, its able to take images quickly with bright, natural colors and sharpness.

There are a lot of software features available on the XOLO Q1200, including Voice commands for accepting calls, and snoozing alarms. There’s a Float-task multi-window mode using which you can split the display between two apps and use them both simultaneously, Gesture Control to change videos, music or images in gallery. A Cold Screen mode lets you to double tap to wake up the device, smart reading which keeps the display on while you are reading something and lots more. But we need to check all of these in detail.

Performance is good on the Q1200 and I didn’t notice any lag in the time spent with the device. The UI is fluid, apps open up quickly and multitasking is quick. But we need to take at a more in-depth look at the performance, gaming and software features of the device. But for now, it seems like a promising device from XOLO.
