OMNIVISION OV50M40 50MP 1/2.88″ sensor launched with Video HDR support for smartphones

omnivision ov50m40 50mp sensor launch features.

OMNIVISION has unveiled its new image sensor, the OMNIVISION OV50M40 50MP Camera sensor designed for versatile smartphone camera applications.

    OMNIVISION OV50M40 Overview -

The OV50M40 sensor offers a 50-megapixel (MP) resolution, making it suitable for use in front, main, ultra-wide, and telephoto cameras. It features a 0.61-micron (µm) pixel CMOS sensor with advanced capabilities, including single exposure dual analogue gain (DAG) video HDR and an always-on low power mode.

Built on OMNIVISION’s PureCel Plus-S stacked-die technology, the OV50M40 combines high resolution with compact pixel size. It can capture 50MP images at 12 frames per second (fps), 12.5MP images at 60 fps, 4K2K video at 60 fps, and 1080p video at 120 fps. The sensor uses a 1/2.88-inch optical format and supports a CPHY/DPHY MIPI interface with dual DOVDD 1.8/1.2V.

Key Features of the OV50M40 -

    • HDR Technology - The sensor supports staggered HDR and DAG HDR. Staggered HDR enhances dynamic range for better video and photo quality, while DAG HDR provides single-exposure HDR to reduce motion artefacts in difficult lighting conditions.
    • Low-Light Performance - With 4-cell binning, advanced noise reduction, and up to 64x analogue gain, the sensor excels in low-light conditions.
    • Autofocus - The sensor includes phase detection autofocus (PDAF) for both binning and full-resolution modes, ensuring sharp telephoto zooms.
    • Always-On Function - This feature enables high-quality image capture with both rear and front cameras, offering motion detection and low power consumption. It also supports 2x or 3x high-quality crop-zoom for telephoto shots.

Availability - The OV50M40 will be available for sampling in Q3 2024, with mass production anticipated to start in Q4 2024.

Commenting on the launch, James Liu, Senior Product Marketing Manager at OMNIVISION, stated:

“With the increasing demand for compact 50MP resolution image sensors in smartphones—across front, main, ultra-wide, and telephoto cameras—our new OV50M40 sensor delivers a versatile solution. It offers mobile phone OEMs a single camera option that fulfils multiple application needs, streamlining the supply chain and lowering costs.”
