Google's Pixel 9 Series Powered by Tensor G4 Chipset has Minor Upgrade with New Modem; Expected New Features
Google is preparing to launch the Pixel 9 series later this month, with most details, including specifications and marketing materials, already leaked.
Information about Google's new processor, the Tensor G4, has been sparse until now, revealing it as a modest upgrade from its predecessor, according to Android Authority.
Tensor G4 CPU Specifications (Expected) -
- The Tensor G4 CPU will have a 4+3+1 core configuration.
- It uses ARMv9.2 cores: Cortex-A520, Cortex-A720, and Cortex-X4.
- Clock speeds are slightly higher than the previous model.
Despite the new cores, the Tensor G4’s multi-core performance might be similar to the Tensor G3’s due to the reduction of one core. Early Geekbench scores suggest approximately 11% improvement in single-core performance and around 3% in multi-core performance.
Google may have adjusted the core layout to enhance cooling, with the new cores designed to be more efficient and reduce power consumption. However, the modem remains the primary power consumer in Tensor SoCs.
Modem and Connectivity -
The Tensor G4 pairs with the new Exynos Modem 5400, which supports satellite connectivity and offers up to 50% better power efficiency compared to the Exynos Modem 5300. Some Tensor G4 devices might still use the older Exynos Modem 5300, potentially including the Pixel 9a.
GPU and Custom IP Blocks -
The Tensor G4 retains the Mali-G715 GPU from the Tensor G3, now clocked at 940 MHz (up from 890 MHz). Google’s custom IP blocks—Edge TPU, GXP, BigWave, and Titan M2—remain unchanged in the Tensor G4. Additionally, the chip continues to use Samsung’s FOPLP packaging technology, contrary to earlier rumours of a switch to FOWLP.
Development and Prototypes -
The initial plan for the Tensor G4 involved developing a fully custom chip called "Redondo," independent of Samsung. However, due to missed deadlines, Google partnered with Samsung to create a minor upgrade known as "zumapro."
To accelerate the Pixel 9 series development, Tensor G3 prototypes were used, as evidenced by early leaks showing the Pixel 9 Pro Fold running on Tensor G3, according to the report.
While the Tensor G4 might not represent a major advancement over its predecessor, it does offer some enhancements, such as a new modem. These minor upgrades indicate that the new Pixel 9 features are more focused on software improvements than hardware changes.
We can expect more details on performance and benchmark scores when the Tensor G4 is officially unveiled on August 13 at the Made by Google event, where the company will also introduce the Pixel Watch 3.
