Google launched Gemini “Search Live” with Voice Input in AI Mode for Hands-Free Conversations
On Wednesday, Google launched “Search Live,” a new feature within its AI Mode experiment that enables U.S. users to have hands-free, real-time voice conversations with Google Search.
Designed for multitasking, whether you're prepping for a trip or cooking, Search Live provides AI-generated spoken responses along with on-screen links for more in-depth exploration.
Highlights of Search Live -
- Conversational Voice Input - Tap the new “Live” button in the Google app to ask questions like, “How do I stop a linen dress from wrinkling in my suitcase?” and get spoken answers.
- Natural Follow-Ups - No need to tap again—just speak your next question (e.g., “What if it still wrinkles?”) and the conversation continues.
- Background Operation - Use other apps while Search Live listens and responds in the background.
- Transcripts & Text Input - Access a transcript of your voice interactions and type responses if preferred.
- Conversation History - Easily revisit previous voice searches via the AI Mode history tab.
How It Works -
Search Live is powered by a specialized version of the Gemini model tailored for voice interactions. It leverages Google's core strengths in search quality and relevance, using a “query fan-out” approach to return a broader and more diverse set of online results.
What’s Coming Next -
Later this year, Google plans to enhance this experience by adding live camera support, allowing users to show Search what they see for more contextually aware and dynamic responses.
Availability -
Search Live with voice input is currently available on the Google app for both Android and iOS in the U.S., exclusively for users enrolled in the AI Mode experiment through Google Labs.
