Apple Watch Ultra 3 could feature Satellite Connectivity, Blood Pressure Monitoring, and More
Apple’s next-generation Ultra Smartwatch is poised to introduce advanced features like satellite connectivity and blood pressure monitoring, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. These enhancements are expected to debut with the 2025 Apple Watch Ultra, possibly referred to as the Ultra 3.
Satellite Connectivity for Apple Watch Ultra -
Gurman reports that Apple plans to integrate satellite connectivity into the 2025 Apple Watch Ultra, enabling users to send text messages via Globalstar’s satellite network when cellular or Wi-Fi services are unavailable. Initially limited to emergency messages, this feature has been expanded in iOS 18 to allow users to text anyone, even in remote locations.
Targeted at adventurers, this feature will enhance safety in areas without cellular coverage. While satellite connectivity is currently offered free for iPhones for two years, it is unclear whether Apple will charge for the service on the Apple Watch Ultra.
Transition to MediaTek Modems -
In addition to satellite connectivity, Apple is set to make a significant hardware change. Gurman indicates that Apple will replace Intel’s cellular modems with MediaTek-designed versions in certain Apple Watch models.
This marks Apple’s first use of MediaTek technology in its devices after extensive evaluation. While Apple is also working on proprietary modems for the iPhone, these are not yet intended for the Apple Watch.
Blood Pressure Monitoring Feature -
Gurman also reveals that Apple is developing blood pressure monitoring for the Apple Watch, potentially launching in 2025. This feature would track blood pressure trends and alert users to signs of hypertension, though it won’t provide exact measurements. Early detection could be critical for preventing heart disease and stroke.
Expected to debut on the Apple Watch Ultra 3, this feature may also be available on standard Apple Watch models. Although still in development following previous delays, Apple is simultaneously working on non-invasive blood glucose monitoring, which remains a future prospect.
Revitalizing Smartwatch Sales -
By incorporating these new health-focused features, Apple aims to revive growth in its Wearables, Home, and Accessories segment, which has experienced declining revenue over the past two years.
Gurman suggests that these innovations could reignite interest in the Apple Watch, providing compelling reasons for consumers to upgrade after a period of slower market growth.
