Apple Explored a Fully Port-Free Design for the iPhone 17 Air, Reports Suggest
Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 Air is generating buzz as new leaks and reports continue to surface. Expected to launch this fall, it is anticipated to be Apple's slimmest iPhone to date, measuring approximately 2mm thinner than other models in the iPhone 17 lineup.
A Slimmer Design Without USB-C Port -
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple initially considered removing the USB-C port from the iPhone 17 Air to create its first fully portless iPhone. He stated, “The iPhone 17 Air will hint at a future of slimmer models without charging ports.”
However, the company reportedly abandoned this plan to comply with EU regulations mandating USB-C adoption. Despite this, Apple is still interested in developing port-free iPhones in the future, depending on the iPhone 17 Air's reception.
Gurman described the iPhone 17 Air as “the start of a major shift for Apple,” suggesting that a successful launch could pave the way for even thinner, portless models. For now, the device retains the USB-C port and is expected to feature a 6.6-inch display, Dynamic Island, a Camera Control button, and battery performance on par with current iPhones.
Dummy Units and Key Design Changes -
Leaker Sonny Dickson recently shared images of iPhone 17 dummy units, confirming several rumoured features. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to include MagSafe, easing concerns about wireless charging compatibility with its thin design. Additionally, it will replace the traditional Ring/Silent switch with an Action button, a change that was speculated but now seems confirmed.
The iPhone 17 series consists of four models. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max feature an elongated rear camera bump housing three lenses, an LED flash, and a microphone. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Air has a similar bump but with a single lens. The standard iPhone 17 shares the Air’s overall design, resembling the iPhone 16. Notably, when placed side by side, the iPhone 17 Air stands out due to its significantly thinner profile.
Expected Price and Release Date -
Gurman estimates the iPhone 17 Air will be priced around $900, positioning it between the base iPhone 17 and the Pro models.
While Apple has yet to confirm any details, leaks and speculation about the iPhone 17 series are expected to continue as the fall launch approaches.
