Qualcomm Unveils New Snapdragon 636 Chipset, 40% faster than 630
Qualcomm has unveiled the all-new Snapdragon 636 chipset in their 4G/5G summit in Hong Kong. Based on a 14nm FinFET technology, the Snapdragon 636 uses eight Kryo 260 cores instead of Cortex A53 cores. This gives the Snapdragon 636 40% better performance and also adds support for ultra-wide 18:9 FHD+ displays.
The integrated Adreno 509 GPU offers 10% increase in gaming performance compared to Adreno 508. Moreover, it also features Snapdragon X12 LTE modem that can provide the download speeds of up to 600 Mbps. Qualcomm has also added its TruPalette and EcoPix features to improve viewing experience on the display of your phone.
The 14-bit Spectra 160 ISP inside the chip supports captures of up to 24 MP without any shutter lag and 16MP dual cameras. There's support for Aqstic audio codec which offers Hi-Fi audio on the go with 192 KHz / 24-bit lossless audio playback. Moreover, with the new chipset, your midrange phone can also get up to 8GB of RAM.
Qualcomm will start shipping Snapdragon 636 from the next month. Earlier this year, in May, the company launched both 630 and 660 chipsets as well, which are said to feature in new smartphones from Xiaomi, namely the Redmi Note 5 set to launch next month.
Last year at the same event Qualcomm had revealed that they were working on a 5G modem. They successfully completed the first trial of the X50 modem (expected to offer speed of up to 5 Gbps) at the event as well.
