Microsoft Kills Nokia X Android smartphones

Nokia's experiment with Android is now dead. RIP Nokia X series smartphones. Microsoft devices chief, Stephen Elop said in an email that the company aims to renew its focus towards Windows Phone.

Elop says:

In addition to the portfolio already planned, we plan to deliver additional lower-cost Lumia devices by shifting select future Nokia X designs and products to Windows Phone devices. We expect to make this shift immediately while continuing to sell and support existing Nokia X products.

Although not surprising, its a very fast retreat. Microsoft has never been happy about Nokia's foray into Android smartphones which was clear from Windows Phone's chief Joe Belfiore reaction about the Nokia X where he said that its something the company was not at all excited about.

Nokia X designs will now become low-cost Windows Phones. The focus of the X series or whatever the new name Microsoft calls it will target the same user-base in developing countries but running Microsoft software.
