ASUS ROG Ally X gaming handheld launched with 7-inch FHD 120Hz display, Ryzen Z1 Extreme, up to 24GB RAM

ASUS has launched its latest handheld gaming console, the ROG Ally X at Computex 2024, showcasing significant upgrades from the original ROG Ally.

Maintaining the powerhouse AMD Ryzen Z1 APU, the ROG Ally X sports 8 Zen 4 cores and 16 threads, with 24 MB of L3 cache and a clock speed reaching 5.1 GHz. Its integrated RDNA 3 iGPU boasts 12 compute units operating at 2800 MHz. The console also retains its predecessor's 7-inch FHD 120Hz display, now with 500 nits brightness and Dolby Vision support.

Notable upgrades include a larger 80Wh battery, doubling the original's capacity, though it still pairs with the same 65W adapter, supporting 100W charging. The internal thermal solution sees enhancements with smaller fans featuring 50% more blades, improving airflow by 10%. Additionally, a redesigned chassis in black offers deeper handles and a more rounded shape for enhanced comfort.

Ergonomic improvements extend to the button and stick arrangements, featuring slanted triggers for improved usability. Smaller macro buttons reduce accidental presses, while the joysticks now boast a more durable module rated for a 5-million-cycle lifespan. The D-Pad receives enhancements for precise eight-direction input, ideal for various game genres.

Connectivity sees upgrades with the replacement of the XG Mobile port with two USB-C ports, one Thunderbolt compatible, allowing for third-party docks and external GPUs. Memory gets a boost, offering up to 24 GB of LPDDR5X memory at 7500 MT/s in dual-channel mode, and storage doubles with a full M.2 slot supporting up to 1 TB.

The I/O setup includes two Type-C ports, one being USB4 (Thunderbolt 4), enabling eGPU use or additional peripherals. Despite these enhancements, the device maintains a weight of 678 grams, just 70 grams more than its predecessor, ensuring balanced weight distribution for comfortable gaming. Additional features include Seamless Sync, dual front-facing speakers with Dolby Atmos support, an updated Armory Crate (SE 1.5) for game library customization, and connectivity options including WIFI 6E and BT 5.2.
