XOLO A510s in the new entrant in the entry-level segment in India. It boasts of a better display, metallic build and 1 GB RAM. It is powered by the 1.3 GHz MediaTek MT6572 chipset, which we have seen on pretty much every smartphone in this segment, however 1 GB RAM is something extra. Let's have a look if the XOLO A510s is something you should consider in this segment in our Unboxing and Hands-on review video.
Inside the box of the A510s, XOLO packs the usual set of accessories alongwith a free screenguard, apart from the one that comes pre-applied on the display.
Here's everything you get inside the box:
Accessories are decent in quality.
The XOLO A510s comes with a 4-inch IPS WVGA (480x800 pixels) display, which is wrongly mentioned on the box to be FWVGA. We reached out to XOLO for the correction but we haven't heard anything back. It is powered by the 1.3 GHz dual-core MediaTek MT6572 chipset which comes with the Mali-400MP GPU which is quite capable of handling games. There's 1 GB of RAM onboard coupled with 4 GB ROM running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. You have 1.27 GB available as internal storage and 1.50 GB available as phone storage.
In terms of connectivity, you get 3G on SIM 1, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS as well as FM Radio. The XOLO A510s is a dual-SIM device but with a difference. The primary SIM slot is a micro-SIM card slot which handles the 3G network, the secondary SIM slot is a regular slot and can use GSM or 2G SIM cards. There's a microSD card slot in there as well capable of taking upto 32 GB microSD cards.
There's a fixed focus 5-megapixel camera at the back capable of recording 720p videos alongwith a LED flash and a VGA front-facing camera. You also have an accelerometer, proximity and light sensors on the device.
In the front you have the 4-inch IPS display, and just below it there are three capacitive buttons for Menu, Home and Back. These buttons do light up but only when they are touched. The back-lighting for these buttons is a bit weak. You will also notice that the XOLO A510s is a bit longer than your average 4-inch device. The top and bottom bezels are quite large. You also have the VGA front-facing camera, proximity and light sensors as well as the earpiece just at the top of the display. The microphone is placed near the bottom lip of the front-panel. The sides of the front-panel are a bit raised protecting the display when it comes in contact with a flat surface.
Moving to the left you have the volume rocker, which is quite sturdy and doesn't make any clicking sounds. It feels really good as well, with excellent travel. There's a brushed metallic trim around the sides which gives the device a very premium look. It feels great to hold in the hand as well.
At the top you have the microUSB data-syncing/charging port as well as the 3.5mm audio jack. The volume rocker finds a place on the right, which is again as sturdy as the volume rocker. The build of the A510s is solid, there's no creaking anywhere. At the bottom there's just the metallic looking trim.
You will find the 5 MP camera, LED flash, XOLO branding at the top and the speakerphone at the bottom, which is a bit flush with the surface, meaning it would muted when the phone is placed on a flat surface. Once you open the backcover you are greeted to a microSIM card slot and a regular SIM card slot with the microSD card slot on their left. The battery compartment which houses the 1400 mAh battery is just below the SIM card slots. There are no moving parts inside, and everything fits perfectly in place.
The backcover again has been painted in a metallic shade, it isn't that glossy and doesn't attract fingerprints. Its a bit flimsy but doesn't flex when its on the phone. It fits into the side frame just like the Galaxy S Duos 2. It again gives the device a very premium feel and is a bit tapered at the sides as well, making the phone easier to hold.
The first thing you notice about the XOLO A510s is how good it feels to hold the device. It has excellent construction, the buttons feels great and everything looks good as well. This continues when you boot up the device and are greeted to the bright 4-inch IPS display which has good color reproduction as well as wide viewing angles. But the touch response is a bit iffy, it feels a bit sluggish and is not precise. It performed quite well in our initial test as well with no lag, even though the phone had just booted up.
It has an almost stock Android experience onboard. With 1 GB RAM, a capable dual-core processor and a price tag of about Rs. 7000, the XOLO A510s might just become the better choice in this segment. We will be back with its benchmarks, gaming as well as the Full Review. Stay tuned.
