Based on what we’ve seen, Sony finally has a smartphone to be proud of, and one that can comfortably compete with the likes of Samsung, HTC and Apple. It’s due out in March, with online retailers Amazon and Clove hinting at a possible 1st March launch date. SIM-free prices are currently estimated at £550, but no network or contract specifics have been confirmed by Sony. If the price is right, we think Samsung might have a fight on its hands. If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, Apple must be thrilled by Sony's Xperia Z. It's a skinny (7.9mm thick) smartphone, sandwiched between two sheets of tempered Gorilla glass. Sound familiar? And just like the iPhone 5, the button-free double-glazing felt pretty close to polished perfection in our sweaty palms when Sony's Holly Rossetti showed Wired.co.uk an early sample. The final and really clever move from Sony is not only to make the Xperia Z as good as it can possibly be but to also kick it out of the door in very timely fashion. The Samsungs and HTCs of this world - Sony’s big competitors in this space - will wait until MWC 2013 in February to launch their top devices for the year. Now it might well be that they both bring out something similar but the fact that Sony has done it a month and a half early means that Sony got it in first and also did so when there was no one else shouting.

More importantly, the Sony Xperia Z will be on the shelf from the beginning of March and that’s going to give it at least a month or two’s head start on whatever the competition can come up with. We don’t have to tell you that gadget-lovers are an impatient bunch. Why wait until the late spring/early summer to get what you want when it’s already in front of you? A very timely move. Sony’s previous Xperia devices have always been a little lacking in some way, but with the Xperia Z, it feels like it's finally found its stride. Aside from the lack of Android 4.2 -- which won’t be an issue for very long, according to Sony -- this blower is packed full of good stuff.

The quad-core processor is a monster, the 1080p screen is pin-sharp and the waterproof design will help the phone find favour with butter-fingered mobile users who are prone to accidentally dropping their expensive devices into random pools of liquid.

With the Xperia Z, Sony has fired the first shot in the smart phone war of 2013, and while we’re sure that Samsung’s reply -- which should come in the shape of the hugely-anticipated Galaxy S4 -- will be equally impressive, this is one of the best Android devices money can buy right now. The Sony Xperia Z is a pretty spectacular phone. It has an amazing display, a strong camera and that pub- pleasing extra that your phone is waterproof, even if it does mean you have to work to get at the headphone socket.

It may be too big for some hands but is manageable by most – don’t let the measurements put you off. Battery life is okay, but improved with Stamina mode. Above all, it looks just great – easily the classiest Sony mobile yet, and an equal with the best Android phones out there. Read more...

We haven't reviewed the Xperia Z fully so we can't make a final verdict yet. At a similar price and closely contended specifications and features it's a hard one to call. We think the Xperia Z could be a major contender to the iPhone 5, and other Android phones for that matter. Read more...
