MIUI 9 will be the last update on these six Xiaomi smartphones
Xiaomi is one of the very few smartphone OEMs that keeps updating their older smartphones. At its recent MIUI 9 event, where the company also launched its Redmi Y1 series in India, they said that even 5-year-old devices like the Mi 2/2s are still getting MIUI updates and will also get the stable build of MIUI 9.
However, the company is now putting some of these phones to pasture. Xiaomi has made an announcement on its MIUI forums that weekly MIUI updates for some phones will be suspended after the stable MIUI 9 update.
The devices that will not get any updates going forward:
- Mi 2/2S
- Mi Note
- Mi 4i
- Redmi Note 4G
- Redmi 2
- Redmi 2 Prime
Xiaomi will be releasing MIUI 9 stable ROM for all these devices as well as the Redmi 1S, however, there will be no further updates. The company says they have factored in the active user base of these devices, hardware limitations along with performance constraints.
MIUI Global Beta ROM updates have also been suspended for these devices. Considering several of these are more than 2 - 3 years old, you really can't fault Xiaomi here. If you are using any of these devices till now, it seems the time is ripe for an upgrade.
Xiaomi also recently launched its new Redmi Y1 series in India, which offer large-screen experience with good selfie cameras at a very affordable price point. You can learn more about them here.
