Samsung's first tri-foldable smartphone: Galaxy G Fold Could Launch Soon
Samsung is reportedly gearing up to launch its first tri-folding smartphone later this year, according to industry sources cited by display analyst Ross Young and blogger yeux1122 on Naver.
During last month’s Galaxy Unpacked event, where the Galaxy S25 Series was unveiled, Samsung briefly showcased a tri-folding device alongside the Project Moohan XR headset and an unreleased pair of smart glasses. This subtle teaser has fueled speculation about Samsung’s next major innovation in the foldable smartphone market.
Introducing the Samsung Galaxy G Fold -
The upcoming device is expected to be named the Galaxy G Fold, following the success of Samsung’s Z Fold series. While the significance of the "G" branding remains unclear, it is believed to reference the phone’s unique folding mechanism.
Unlike HUAWEI’s Mate XT, which featured an S-shaped fold that left part of the screen exposed, Samsung’s G-shaped design folds inward from both sides, fully enclosing the display when closed. This design is expected to improve durability by minimizing the risk of scratches, impacts, and long-term wear.
Leaked Specifications: A Closer Look at the Galaxy G Fold -
Key leaked details about the Galaxy G Fold include -
- Display: A 9.96-inch screen when unfolded, making it nearly 30% larger than the Z Fold 6’s 7.6-inch display.
- Folded Height: Approximately 6.54 inches, comparable to a standard smartphone.
- Weight & Thickness: Expected to be similar to Huawei’s Mate XT but slightly thicker due to the innovative folding mechanism.
- Materials: The device will feature newly developed displays and protective films, differing from those used in Samsung’s current Z-series foldable.
Expected Launch Timeline -
While initial reports suggested a 2026 release, recent leaks indicate that Samsung may unveil the Galaxy G Fold as early as Q3 2025. Ross Young supports this timeline, with insider Jukanlosreve claiming that production of tri-fold components will begin in Q2 2025. However, the launch is expected to be limited, with only around 200,000 units produced—positioning it as a niche device rather than a mainstream offering.
Samsung’s Expanding Foldable Lineup -
In addition to the Galaxy G Fold, Samsung is also expected to introduce several other foldable devices this year, including the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, and a budget-friendly Z Flip 7 FE. While the tri-fold device could launch alongside these models, it remains uncertain whether it will officially debut in 2025 or 2026.
