Samsung Exynos 2400 Sets the Pace as the First to Utilize FOWLP Technology for Enhanced Thermal Management
Samsung unveiled the Exynos 2400 Deca-Core processor this week, which powers the Galaxy S24 and S24+ smartphones in India and European countries. Notably, the Exynos 2400 marks the first utilization of Fan-out Wafer Level Package (FOWLP) technology in an Exynos processor, as per the company's announcement.
The adoption of a Fan-out Wafer Level Package (FOWLP) creates additional space for I/O connections, facilitating the swift and efficient movement of electric signals. Samsung emphasizes that the Exynos 2400 achieves significant advancements in heat management by introducing packaging with lower heat resistance, thereby enabling a more compact form factor. This innovation ensures that the device remains cooler even during prolonged use of apps and intense gaming sessions.
FOWLP contributes to a 23% increase in heat resistance during single-core operation and an 8% improvement for multi-core performance compared to the flip-chip package. Additionally, it enables a reduction in form factor by up to 40% and a decrease in thickness by up to 30%, achieved by eliminating the substrate.
According to available information, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus, powered by the Exynos 2400, exhibits improved performance in the 3D Mark Solar Bay Stress test when compared to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, which runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy. A comprehensive assessment will be necessary once we have the opportunity to physically examine both phones.
Additionally, other sources indicate that the Exynos 2400's hexa-core Samsung Xclipse 940 GPU achieves an impressive score of 4231 in the 3D Mark Wildlife Extreme test, putting it on par with the Apple A17 Pro and surpassing the Exynos 2200 utilized in the Galaxy S22 in certain regions by a factor of 2.
Earlier speculations hinted at elevated power consumption for the Xclipse 940 in the Exynos 2400. Furthermore, there are reports of a marginal enhancement in the GPU of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy, with claims that the Adreno 750 GPU reaches clock speeds of up to 1000MHz, compared to the 903MHz in the standard version.
While the Exynos 2400 from Samsung employs the company's own 4LPP+ technology, which is considered less proficient in terms of performance and area when compared to Snapdragon's utilization of TSMC's N4P process, reports suggest that power consumption, at least for the GPU, is nearly equivalent between the two.
