Qualcomm Confirms Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Official Name, Launch at Snapdragon Summit 2025 on September 23
Qualcomm has announced that the Snapdragon Summit 2025 will take place on September 23rd, where it will unveil the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Elite. While earlier leaks suggested the name Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, the company has officially confirmed that its next flagship mobile platform will be called the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.
Understanding the Naming Convention -
Qualcomm explained that the “Gen 5” label is not a skipped generation but part of its ongoing single-digit naming system. It signifies the fifth generation of the Snapdragon 8 series flagship platform and is intended to make the product roadmap clearer and easier for consumers to follow.
The lineup so far includes the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3, and 8 Elite, with the newly announced Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 marking the fifth iteration in the series.
Evolution of the Naming Strategy -
According to Qualcomm, this naming style is an evolution of its framework rather than a complete overhaul. Last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite introduced a new tier in the flagship lineup, focusing on advanced performance and positioning. The current system factors in performance, release cycles, and product hierarchy.
The Role of “Elite” -
The “Elite” designation remains exclusive to Qualcomm’s most advanced processors. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 builds upon the foundation set by its predecessor, which introduced the Qualcomm Oryon CPU, designed to deliver better performance and efficiency. The new chip will further refine and expand these capabilities.
Impact on Future Products -
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 marks the beginning of a broader strategy, with upcoming mobile platforms also set to follow the new “Gen 5” naming convention. This uniform approach is designed to make it easier for both consumers and OEMs to understand Qualcomm’s product lineup and track the performance improvements across generations.
The Xiaomi 17 series, launching later this month, will be the first to debut with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, shortly after the chipset’s official unveiling.
