Google Pixel 10’s Tensor G5 Chip Reportedly Manufactured by TSMC
The upcoming Google Pixel 10 will feature the Tensor G5 chip manufactured by TSMC, marking a departure from Samsung as the chipmaker. Meanwhile, the Pixel 9's Tensor G4, still produced by Samsung, will receive minor enhancements, as reported by Android Authority.
Evidence sourced from public trade databases confirms these speculations and offers insights into the new chip. The shipping record for a Tensor G5 sample chip includes the codename "Laguna Beach" and references "LGA," corroborating the shift to TSMC.
Google has historically used abbreviations like "WHI" for Whitechapel (Tensor G1) and "ZPR" for Zuma Pro (Tensor G4). Notably, the manifest mentions TSMC and InFO POP, a packaging technology exclusive to TSMC, further supporting the transition. Key points from the manifest include:
- The chip is labeled as revision "A0," indicating it is an early version with anticipated future revisions.
- "OTP, V1" denotes the initial version of one-time programmable data, enabling Google to adjust chip parameters without altering its architecture.
- "NPI-OPEN" signifies an early sample still in the New Product Introduction phase, where manufacturing processes are being refined.
The chip has successfully passed basic functionality tests, including the SLT (system-level test), despite being approximately 16 months away from release. Early sampling is necessary to ensure the platform readiness on time. Furthermore, the entry discloses that the chip integrates 16GB of package-on-package RAM from Samsung Electronics Co., consistent with leaks regarding upgraded RAM in the Pixel 9 Pro.
The exporter listed is Google LLC in Taiwan, while the importer is Tessolve Semiconductor in India, specializing in semiconductor solutions. This suggests Google is outsourcing tasks previously handled by Samsung.
While the Pixel 9's release is pending, the transition to a TSMC-manufactured chip for the Pixel 10 hints at promising enhancements for future devices. Detailed performance and specifications of the Tensor G4 will be unveiled closer to its anticipated launch in October this year.
