Google renames Now on Tap to 'Screen Search', and Now Cards to 'Feed'

google app beta 6 5 update

The new Google App beta version 6.5 is making some major changes with its features. First is that Google Now on Tap is being renamed to "Screen Search." Although, it would now be easier to understand, people never got used to the feature which was announced last year with Android Marshmallow.

Now on Tap is accessible when you long tap the home button and Google will search the contents of the display no matter which app you are in to give you search results. It worked well with conversations and later translations were also added. With the new name it would be a lot easier for the average user to understand the feature.

Now Cards have also been renamed to "Feed"  which is apt word for what it shows including weather, shipment status, bills you need to play, directions, parking spot and a lot more. You can check both changes in the screenshot above.

Then there's In-App search which was just introduced last month which allows you to search for content within any app. Although there is no update in terms of how it works. The In-App search shortcut can now be added to your homescreens. So instead of opening search and then swiping to the end of the categories to reach the "In Apps" option, you can now go to Google App Settings > In Apps and choose "Add to Home screen" option.

Google is prepping Android apps for its October 4th launch of the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones both of which were seen earlier today in a few leaked images. A new 4K compatible Chromecast is also expected at the launch.
