Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus Launch Set for December 7
Xiaomi has confirmed on social network Weibo that they are going to launch Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus on December 7. The image, which accompanied the post, showcased the 18:9 aspect ratio displays with thin bezels and metal design.
Unfortunately, the Weibo post from the company hasn’t revealed many details about the actual specifications of the devices. However, TENAA (Chinese telecommunications certification authority) revealed that the Xiaomi Redmi 5 will come with a 5.7-inch HD+ display. The hardware capacitive buttons will make way for on-screen buttons to give the phone a bezel-less design.
The Redmi 5 is expected to run on the Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor which is currently found on the Redmi Note 4. The previous-gen Redmi 4 Prime runs on the Snapdragon 435 octa-core processor.
The TENAA listings further reveal several storage and RAM variants. From what we could gather there will be at least three options to choose from: 2 GB with 16 GB storage, 3 GB RAM with 32 GB, or 4 GB RAM with 64 GB storage. Moreover, all these variant will have storage expansion as well with a microSD card slot. We may see a smaller battery here to accomodate the larger display, which is expected to be rated at 3200 mAh capacity while the Redmi 4 came with a 4100 mAh unit.
The fingerprint scanner, as usual, sits on the back below the camera. Given the company has already released Nougat based MIUI 9 for most of its smartphones, we expect it on the Redmi 5 as well.
The Redmi 5 Plus may pack a larger 4100 mAh battery and run on the Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor. It should be available in 3GB/4GB RAM variants as well.
Now, much of the specifications are still speculations, so take these with a pinch of salt. We will know more about both phones in just about a week. Stay tuned.
