Sony announces new Xperia X series at MWC 2016, with 3 smartphones

Sony today announced a new series of smartphone called the Xperia X, and in that series are 3 smartphones at present, the Xperia XA, Xperia X and Xperia X Performance. Let's have a look at three new smartphones announced by Sony at MWC 2016.

Sony Xperia XA

The Xperia XA is a neat looking lower mid-range smartphone which comes with a 5-inch HD 720p curved edge-to-edge display. Its one of the better looking Sony smartphones.

It runs on the octa-core MediaTek Helio P10 MT6755 processor with Android 6.0 Marshmallow taking care of everyday tasks. It will be offered in both single and dual SIM flavors along with support for 4G LTE. Common to both variants are a set of 13MP rear camera with Hybrid Auto-Focus and an 8MP front-facing camera for selfies (88-degree wide-angle lens).

The Xperia XA is quite thin at about 7.9mm and packs in a 2300 mAh battery with support for Qnovo's adaptive fast charging and even with that it weighs in a hair under 138 grams. The curved sides and metal frame are definitely going to make it easier to grip and use in one hand.

There is a dedicated camera shutter key here, but no fingerprint sensor. You will find the round power button from previous-gen Xperia devices here. The Xperia XA will come in white, graphite black and two interesting gold color options, lime and rose. It will be available in Summer 2016, but there;s no definite time-frame or pricing available at present.

Sony Xperia X and X Performance

The Xperia X like a 'mini' variant of the flagship Xperia X Performance, which we will get to in a moment. Although similar in size, it packs far less powerful internals.

The Xperia X runs on the Snapdragon 650 hexa-core processor and Xperia X Performance on the new Snapdragon 820 quad-core chipset. Both come with 5-inch 1080p IPS displays running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. There's a 23MP rear camera here with Sony'd new Predictive Hybrid AutoFocus system letting you choose the subject and predict its direction of motion to always keep it in motion. Accompanying the fancy new rear camera, is a 13MP front-facing camera which allows for wider field-of-view with its 22mm wide-angle lens.

Screen Size 5.0 inches (1080 x 1920 pixels, 441 ppi)
Camera Back: 23 MP, 1080p@30fps; Front: 13 MP
Processor Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 820

OS Android OS, v6.0.1 (Marshmallow)
Dimension & Weight 144.8 x 71.1 x 7.6 mm, 165 g
Connectivity LTE
Battery 2700 mAh

Just like the Xperia XA, the Xperia X and X Performance too will come in both single and dual SIM variants with 4G LTE connectivity in tow. There's dual-band WiFi (MIMO), Bluetooth 4.2, GPS with GLONASS and NFC available on both as well. Unlike the Xperia XA, there is a fingerprint sensor on both the Xperia X devices similar to the one on the Xperia Z5.

Coming to battery, the Xperia X gets a slightly smaller 2630 mAh battery while the Xpeira X Performance will have to make do with a 2700 mAh unit. Both support Qnovo's adaptive fast charging technology for faster charging without compromising battery health and longevity.

Both the Xperia X devices will come in Graphite Black, White as well as Rose Gold and Lime Gold offerings and will be available in Summer 2016. At present there is no word on price here as well.
