Samsung Unveils UFS 5.0 Storage Technology for Next-Generation On-Device AI
Samsung has announced its latest Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 5.0 solution, a new high-performance storage standard developed to meet the growing requirements of on-device artificial intelligence applications in future mobile devices.
The introduction of UFS 5.0 comes as the industry increasingly shifts generative AI workloads from cloud-based infrastructure to local hardware, creating a need for faster and more efficient data access within smartphones, wearables, and extended reality (XR) devices.
Performance Improvements
Built on the latest JEDEC embedded memory interface standards, Samsung's UFS 5.0 delivers substantial gains in both read and write speeds compared to previous generations.
- Sequential read speeds of up to 10.8GB/s
- Sequential write speeds of up to 9.5GB/s
- More than twice the performance of UFS 4.1
- Optimized for handling large language models (LLMs) and AI workloads directly on devices
The increased bandwidth is expected to reduce latency and improve responsiveness when processing AI-powered features locally.
Enhanced Power Efficiency
Samsung states that UFS 5.0 offers a 40% improvement in power efficiency compared to UFS 4.1. The gains are achieved through technologies such as clock gating and multi-voltage operation, which help minimize energy consumption while maintaining high data transfer performance.
The improved efficiency is intended to support longer battery life in AI-enabled mobile devices.
Compact Design and Capacity
In addition to performance enhancements, Samsung has reduced the physical footprint of the storage module, providing manufacturers with greater flexibility when designing compact devices.
| Feature | UFS 5.0 | Compared to UFS 4.1 |
| Dimensions | 7.5mm × 13mm × 0.9mm | 16.7% smaller footprint |
| Maximum Capacity | Up to 1TB | Similar maximum capacity |
| Sequential Read Speed | Up to 10.8GB/s | More than 2× faster |
| Sequential Write Speed | Up to 9.5GB/s | Significantly improved |
Production and Deployment Plans
Samsung plans to begin mass production of UFS 5.0 memory chips during the fourth quarter of this year. The company intends to offer the storage solution in multiple capacity options for integration across a wide range of premium devices.
Target applications include:
- Flagship smartphones
- Extended reality (XR) headsets
- Smart wearables
- Future AI-powered mobile platforms
Jangseok Choi, Head of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics, stated
Note: In the era of on-device AI continues to advance, storage solutions are becoming a key element in shaping AI experiences. He noted that the successful development of the industry's first UFS 5.0 technology establishes a new standard for mobile storage performance and highlights Samsung's ongoing efforts to innovate for next-generation mobile platforms.
