OnePlus 16 launched with 6.78-inch 1.5K 185Hz gaming display, Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 SoC, 200MP camera, 9000mAh battery

OnePlus has officially launched its latest flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 16 in China, as previously promised. The new device brings significant hardware upgrades, focusing on mobile gaming, ultra-high refresh rates, improved thermal management, advanced imaging capabilities, and extended battery life.

Design and Display

The OnePlus 16 features a symmetrical four-sided bezel design measuring just 1.15mm. It will be available in three finishes: Starlight, Dark Forest, and Martian Masterpiece. The Starlight edition uses a silk glass finishing process and incorporates an integrated breathing light indicator.

The smartphone introduces the fourth-generation Oriental Screen, featuring custom X4 luminescent material. The display is designed to deliver smooth visuals, responsive touch interactions, and improved visibility across different lighting conditions.

Key display highlights include:

  • Refresh Rate: Supports a global refresh rate of up to 165Hz, alongside an industry-first gaming refresh rate of 185Hz, enabled by a redesigned LTPO circuit.
  • Brightness: Offers hardware-level minimum brightness of just 1 nit and a dedicated sunlight mode for improved outdoor visibility.
  • Color Accuracy: Features triple-calibrated color tuning for consistent and accurate color reproduction.

Processing, Architecture and Cooling

The OnePlus 16 is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor, manufactured using a 2nm process. According to the company's official performance figures, the chipset delivers substantial improvements over its predecessor.

  • 13% higher CPU performance
  • 44% improvement in GPU processing performance
  • 10% better overall energy efficiency
  • Up to twice the sustained performance compared with previous benchmarks

The processor is supported by a proprietary e-sports triple-chip architecture designed to improve network connectivity, display quality, and touch responsiveness. The setup includes the G3 network chip for reducing latency, the P4 Super Display Chip for enhanced motion clarity, and the T3 touch-processing chip.

For gaming, OnePlus has introduced its Wind Chaser Game Kernel, which incorporates multi-frame generation technology to improve graphics rendering and deliver smoother gameplay.

Thermal management is handled by the Glacier Cooling System. Its zoned acceleration architecture is designed to improve thermal gel efficiency by 50%, helping maintain performance during extended gaming sessions. The device also features a high-precision gyroscope tuned for fine aiming and recoil control in shooter games.

Gaming Optimizations

The OnePlus 16's 185Hz display supports several high-frame-rate mobile games from launch, including PUBG Mobile, Delta Force, Valorant: Energy Operation, Dark Zone, CrossFire: Mobile, Naruto, and Firefly Assault.

The smartphone also supports gameplay at more than 165fps with ultra-high graphics settings in Honor of Kings. OnePlus plans to expand high-frame-rate gaming support to additional titles, including Minecraft and Clash of Clans.

These optimizations, combined with the dedicated gaming kernel, triple-chip architecture, and enhanced cooling system, are designed to provide a smoother and more responsive gaming experience.

Battery, Charging and Additional Features

The OnePlus 16 packs a 9,000mAh Glacier Battery, the largest battery capacity ever fitted to a OnePlus smartphone. The high-capacity battery is designed to support extended usage, particularly during gaming and other demanding activities.

Charging capabilities include:

  • 100W SuperVOOC wired fast charging
  • 50W wireless charging
  • 27W reverse wired charging
  • Full-scenario bypass charging
  • OPPO's Energy Concentration Chip for maintaining performance stability at lower battery levels

Other hardware features include an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, symmetrical dual stereo speakers, an X-axis linear vibration motor, tri-band GPS, and support for the n79 cellular frequency band.

The smartphone also offers a comprehensive range of ingress protection ratings, including IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K, providing protection against dust and water exposure under specified test conditions.

Camera Configuration

The OnePlus 16 features a multi-camera system powered by the LUMO light and shadow imaging engine. The setup combines a high-resolution primary sensor with a periscope telephoto camera and an ultra-wide-angle lens.

  • Primary Camera: 200MP sensor with a 1/1.4-inch optical format
  • Telephoto Camera: 50MP periscope lens with a 1/1.95-inch sensor format and 3x optical zoom
  • Ultra-Wide Camera: 50MP landscape camera
  • Front Camera: 50MP sensor

The imaging system is designed to deliver detailed photographs across different shooting scenarios, with the periscope camera providing additional flexibility for distant subjects.

Software and AI Features

The OnePlus 16 runs ColorOS 17 out of the box, introducing an updated user interface with smoother animations and a more fluid visual design.

The software also expands connectivity with Apple's ecosystem, allowing users to access cross-platform features between compatible devices. In addition, ColorOS 17 introduces several AI-powered productivity tools.

These include automatic organization of classroom notes, formula translation, and AI-assisted academic problem-solving. Together, the software enhancements aim to improve everyday usability, productivity, and connectivity across devices.
