Super thin Moto Z and new Moto Z Play launched in India with Moto Mods

Lenovo has brought its new flagship smartphones to India. The Moto Z and Moto Z Play showed everyone the utility of a modular approach to smartphones. Given the convoluted effort from LG, MotoMods are easier to use and possibly to develop as well.

Moto Z

Moto Z is the thinnest flagships around at just 5.2mm but it still packs quite a punch. You get a 5.5-inch Quad-HD (1440x2560 Pixels) AMOLED display running on the Snapdragon 820 quad-core processor with 4GB RAM. There's 64GB onboard storage and you can expand storage with a microSD card slot.

Even with such a thin device Lenovo was able to add a 2600 mAh battery keeping the weight down to just 136 grams. The entire device is made of metal and the front is protected by Gorilla Glass 4. One thing to note here is that the Moto Z doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack and uses the USB Type-C port for audio, but you would get an adapter within the box. There's a 13MP f/1.8 aperture rear camera here capable of recording 4K videos and a 5MP front-camera for selfies.

The Moto Z is not water resistant but there's a water repellant nano-coating to prevent damage from an occasional splash. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE support, dual-band WiFi ac, Bluetooth 4.2 LE, GPS with GLONASS and NFC. You also have a fingerprint sensor up front similar to the Moto G4 Plus.

Moto Z Play

The Moto Z Play is the newest member of the series and it does support MotoMods as well. It has mid-range specs, with a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with a full-HD resolution running on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 625 processor which is built on a 14nm process. You again have 32GB internal storage which is expandable with a microSD card slot.

There's 3GB RAM onboard and a 16MP rear camera here which also has laser assisted autofocus as well as phase detection autofocus. It can record 4K videos as well. Then there's the huge battery inside at 3510 mAh while still keeping the profile of the device very thin at just 7mm. You also get NFC and a fingerprint sensor for mobile payments.

The major difference is in design here with the Moto Z Play getting a glass back panel instead of metal.

Moto Mods

Lenovo is bringing all the MotoMods to India, you will get a Moto Shell within the box and you will be able to buy a battery pack, the InstaShare Projector MotoMod, JBL Soundboost as well as the Hasselblad TrueZoom MotoMod equipped with its own camera sensor and 10X optical zoom.
