Micromax Canvas Infinity is a budget smartphone with a 720p bezel-less display, dated hardware

Micromax today launched its bezel-less, tall-display Canvas Infinity smartphone. It packs a 5.7-inch 18:9 IPS display with a pedestrian 1440x720 pixels resolution. Making matters worse is that it runs on the Snapdragon 425, a year old processor although you get Android 7.1 Nougat onboard. There's 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage which is expandable.

On the camera front, you get a 16-megapixel camera for selfies which is a first in the segment, and a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash. The Canvas Infinity is capable of shooting 1080p videos at 30 FPS. Powering the phone is a 2900 mAh battery, which when coupled with a 5.7-inch display and an older processor isn't a great recipe. The phone has a metal frame, however, the back is removable where you will also find the fingerprint sensor.

You get the general connectivity options including dual-SIM 4G VoLTE support, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and not much else. Micromax is also promising a 24-hour repair or replace policy for the Canvas Infinity, which would be a really tall task. They have also said that the phone will be upgradeable to Android Oreo, but I wouldn't hold my breath. The company doesn't have a great track record of keeping to their promises, evident from the lack of software updates, buyback programs which never materialized and previous service policies which never materialized.

Coming back to the Canvas Infinity, it has been priced at Rs. 9999 and will be available from Amazon.in. Registrations are open now and sale starts on September 1st. If you are planning to buy the phone, I would recommend waiting for the first few sales to be over and see the feedback from both reviewers and customers. Quality control isn't a word that I would associate with Micromax or YU.
