Google I/O 2026 announces Gemini-powered Android XR smart glasses in partnership with Samsung
Google unveiled new advancements for Android XR, its extended reality platform developed in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm, at its annual I/O 2026 conference. A major highlight of the announcement was the integration of Google’s Gemini AI into smart eyewear, designed to deliver contextual and hands-free assistance across devices such as XR headsets and smart glasses.
Google said its smart eyewear strategy will include two separate categories:
- Audio Glasses: Smart glasses equipped with over-ear speakers for voice-based real-time assistance.
- Display Glasses: Glasses capable of projecting visual information directly into the user’s field of view.
The company confirmed that the audio glasses will be the first product category to launch, with availability planned for autumn 2026.
Hardware Partnerships and Design -
To make smart glasses more practical for everyday use, Google has partnered with Samsung along with eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker.
During the keynote presentation, Google showcased two early design concepts that will be incorporated into the upcoming autumn collections from both brands. The focus is on lightweight, stylish designs intended for comfortable all-day usage.
Gemini-Powered Features and Capabilities -
The upcoming audio glasses support Gemini activation through the “Hey Google” voice command or via touch controls placed on the frame. Since the glasses connect with both Android and iOS smartphones, Gemini uses the paired phone’s connectivity to enable several AI-powered experiences.
Environmental Awareness and Navigation -
- Visual Search: Users can ask Gemini to interpret nearby surroundings, such as identifying clouds, translating text on signs, or checking restaurant reviews while walking past a location.
- Navigation Assistance: Using spatial awareness and location tracking, the glasses can provide spoken turn-by-turn directions and dynamically add stops during navigation.
Communication and Entertainment -
- Hands-Free Communication: Users can make calls, send messages, and receive voice summaries of notifications.
- Private Audio Playback: Integrated over-ear speakers support music playback and other audio experiences tailored to the surrounding environment.
Productivity and Content Creation -
- Camera and AI Editing Tools: Built-in cameras let users capture photos and videos, while Google’s “Nano Banana” AI editing system enables voice-based edits such as removing distractions or adding digital effects.
- Real-Time Translation: The glasses can translate spoken conversations and written text in real time, with audio responses designed to preserve the original speaker’s tone and pitch.
- Voice-Based App Control: Gemini supports multi-step actions in the background, such as preparing a food delivery order on DoorDash for user approval. The system also integrates with apps including Uber and Mondly, enabling complete voice-based smartphone interaction.
Google said more information regarding pricing, regional availability, and launch timelines for the Gentle Monster and Warby Parker smart glasses will be shared closer to the autumn 2026 release window.
